ORAL BIOGRAPHY / DOCUMENTING NEW MEXICAN LIVES
As the world drifts off course NUEVO MEXICO PROFUNDO is pleased to announce an ambitious project to document the past for the future. We’re inspired by the Works Progress Administration interviewers of the 1930s but differ from them in our intent to gather in-depth narratives of New Mexican lives. We also photodocument people, material culture, and settings pertinent to the interviews. The project diversifies PROFUNDO’s commitment to historic churches, and we further broaden the scope by including people with interests—a cross section—unrelated to preservation. Our goal is to build an archive of New Mexican lives so that people looking back on us in fifty or a hundred years will have an intimate view of our cultures and lifestyles. Interviews are conducted outdoors with social distance maintained. The archive will be housed at the Center for Southwest Research, University of New Mexico.
