About the event
THIS TOUR IS FILLED TO CAPACITY.
Please join us on 3 June 2023 for a tour of Our Lady of Guadalupe church plus historical and archaeological sites at Zuni Pueblo. We meet at the Zuni Visitor Center at 10:00 and the tour concludes around 3:00. Our Zuni guides take us in vans first for a quick walking visit of Hawikkuh and then to the tower and petroglyph sites at Badger Springs. After lunch we visit Our Lady of Guadalupe church, including the life-sized kachina murals painted by Alex Seowtewa and his sons on the upper nave walls, and then we briefly visit the Middle Village.
The ticket cost is $60 per person, all of which is donated to Zuni for preservation of the church.
Badger Springs is a drive-up site but once there requires walking on uneven ground. At Hawikkuh we walk around the archaeological site on an improved trail.
Lunch is on your own—we will recommend restaurants and markets or you can bring your meal—and everyone is welcome to join us at a seating area outside the visitor center. There is an informal inn at Zuni Pueblo and there are several hotels in nearby Gallup. For jewelry and art purchases there are stores at the pueblo and two trading posts around Vanderwagen, between Zuni and Gallup.
This tour was organized in cooperation with the Zuni Visitor Center.
There is more information on the Zuni mission here.
A visit to El Morro National Monument is highly recommended while in the area.
