SANTA CRUZ DE LA CAÑADA, LA PUEBLA, OHKAY OWINGEH, CHAMITA

We meet at 10:00 at Holy Family Parish in Chimayó and drive in caravan (in your own car) to visit the newly and beautifully restored Santo Niño in La Puebla. Thereafter we visit one of the most exceptional and historically important churches in New Mexico, La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada (also known as Holy Cross). Camilla Trujillo offers a short talk on the history of the church, and master santero Felix López offers another on the church’s artwork and its conservation. Some images of the church are here.

After a break for lunch (on your own) we regroup at 1:30 at Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, where guided by Juan Casias we visit two gothic churches: the stone Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, with artistically painted walls and a grotto chancel; and the brick San Juan Bautista, whose features include exceptional stained glass, an altar screen depicting the…
