About the event
We meet at 1:30 at Pueblo Pintado, an extraordinary Chaco outlier in an isolated location on the Navajo Reservation. Our visit is guided by Kialo Winters, owner of Navajo Tours USA.
We then drive about fifty minutes to the Crownpoint Rug Auction, where Marcella M. Hale orients our visit with a talk on the history of the auction and insights regarding Navajo weaving. The auction is a fascinating cultural experience even if you do not intend to bid. Other Navajo craftspeople and a food vendor are also at the site.
After a night (on your own) in Gallup we regroup at 10:00 on Saturday morning at the Zuni Visitor Center. Zuni tribal members Kenny Bowekaty and Shaun Latone guide our visit to the Lookout Tower, Badger Springs petroglyph site, Hawikku, and, after lunch, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church to see the life-sized kachina murals painted by Alex Seowtewa and his sons on…
