About the event

TICKETS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS TOUR

On June 27, 2020 the group meets at 10:30 at the T in Peñasco (intersection of Routes 76 and 75). We drive in caravan to Picurís Pueblo, where after a welcome by Governor Craig Quanchello we visit San Lorenzo church, the old pueblo, and the round kiva. Picurís guide Cecilia Shields provides insights and explanations along the way.

We then visit santera Lorrie Garcia and furniture maker Andrew Garcia at their home studio in Peñasco. Frank Graziano leads an open interview with Lorrie, followed by questions from the group. We also view Lorrie’s and Andrew’s work.

Lunch is at Sugar Nymphs Bistro, and after lunch we drive ten minutes in caravan to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church in Placita, built in 1869. We visit the church with mayordomos Robert and Francella Vazquez.

Following the visit we cross the road to the home studio of santero Gabriel Gonzalez. Frank Graziano leads an open interview with Gabriel, followed by questions from the group. Afterward Gabriel gives us a tour of his work.

The trip could conclude at this point, or if the group desires we could drive about fifteen minutes for a scenic overview of Llano Largo followed by an exterior visit of San Acacio. This chapel, in a beautiful setting, was closed in the 1990s and is in serious disrepair. NUEVO MEXICO PROFUNDO hopes to raise funds for its stabilization.

The tour is guided by Frank Graziano, author of Historic Churches of New Mexico Today. Please carpool as much as possible, so we minimize the length of the caravan. Proceeds from the tour support the remudding of San Lorenzo at Picurís Pueblo, with an additional contribution to San Antonio de Padua Parish for repairs at Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
