EL RITO STUDIO VISITS

We meet at 10:45 in the parking lot of San Juan Nepomuceno Church in El Rito, NM and drive together in caravan to the home of santero/outsider artist Nicholas Herrera and photographer Beth Wald. Nicholas gives us a tour around the buildings and grounds of a compound owned by his family for generations, including several outdoor sculptures, a chapel, artworks on display, antique cars, the junk pile from which he recycles materials for his creations, a welding shop, and his studio. He also shows works in progress and demonstrates techniques. We then visit Beth’s studio and she shows her work in photography and relates the genesis of select images taken during her travels in Peru, Argentina, Afghanistan, Nepal, and New Mexico. The trip concludes around 1:30.
